چکیده

Terrain data of very large scale is widely used in many applications, such as virtual reality, environmental analysis, and GIS. The large size of terrain data makes it very demanding on memory and processing power during visualization and spatial analysis. Multi-resolution techniques have been introduced to address this problem. A Multi-Resolution Terrain Model (MRTM) can provide a large number of simplified approximations (meshes) at various resolution levels together with the original model. For many applications, MRTM can reduce the required data amount by replacing the original terrain model with a mesh at a lower resolution. Such a mesh contains much less data but can be accurate enough according to application requirements. The multi-resolution techniques are applied for both terrain visualization and spatial analysis. However, most existing approaches are based on main memory, i.e., they assume that the entire MRTM can fit in the memory. The fast growing rate of terrain data makes this assumption increasingly impractical. These ix

Assimilation of Break line and LiDAR Data within ESRI ’ s Terrain Data Structure ( TDS ) for creating a Multi - Resolution Terrain Model

Building a digital terrain model (DTM) from LiDAR data can successfully be performed using a few techniques, but the quality of the resulted model and the way the terrain information is handled during the processing phase remain a challenge. A new framework for creating a DTM from LiDAR data within ArcGIS ® utilizes the new ESRI data structure known as Terrain Data Set (TDS). This article prese...

Producing Seamless Multi-Source Quality-Dependent Digital Terrain Models

Digital Terrain Model (DTM) databases are one of the more common tools for precise and continuous representation of our natural environment. New data acquisition technologies yield rapid and frequent updating of existing topographic databases (from here on it will be referred to as DTMs). These technologies present high accuracies and resolution levels that were not known until recently. As a r...

Efficient Ray Intersection for Visualization and Navigation of Global Terrain using Spheroidal Height-Augmented Quadtrees

We present an algorithm for eeciently computing ray intersections with multi-resolution global terrain partitioned by spheroidal height-augmented quadtrees. While previous methods support terrain deened on a Cartesian coordinate system, our methods support terrain deened on a two-parameter ellipsoidal coordinate system. This curvilin-ear system is necessary for an accurate model of global terra...

Efficient Ray Intersection with Global Terrain using Spheroidal Height- Augmented Quadtrees Tech Report 98-38

We present an algorithm for efficiently computing ray intersections with multi-resolution global terrain which is partitioned by spheroidal height-augmented quadtrees. This curvilinear system is necessary for an accurate model of ...

CTDB 3D Viewer Editor

Compact terrain database (CTDB) is a complex terrain database format widely used by the military in training simulations. Currently, many CTDB viewers are made specifically to render the terrain and object models 3 dimensionally in high resolution. These programs focus on editing capabilities that either change the way the terrain is presented in 3D or convert the loaded database to a different...
